The northern lights

01What are the chances of seeing the northern lights?

Our aurora success rate is 98,10% verified over the last 3 years. This is one of the highest in Tromsø. We achieve this by following real-time aurora forecasts, chasing clear skies across the region — and if needed, crossing into Finland. The main enemy is clouds, not aurora activity. Tromsø has many microclimates, so clear sky is almost always findable within a 1–3 hour drive.

02When is the best time to see the northern lights?

The northern lights season in Tromsø runs from early September to early April. You need darkness to see them, which means they're not visible in summer. Peak season is late september–mars when nights are longest and aurora activity tends to be highest. We recommend staying at least 3-4 nights to maximise your chances.

03What if it's cloudy?

Clouds are the main challenge - not aurora activity. This is exactly why you need a guide. We monitor multiple weather forecasts in real time and got over 50 skycams pointing towards the sky on diffrent places around Tromsø and Finland. When it's overcast in Tromsø, it's often clear 30–60 minutes away. We drive until we find clear sky, even if that means crossing into Finland.

04Can I see the northern lights from the city?

On very active nights with strong displays, yes — but light pollution significantly reduces visibility. To see the subtle, dancing, multi-coloured aurora, you need to get away from city lights. Our tours take you to dark, remote locations where the full display is visible even on moderate nights.

Our tours

01What is the difference between the minibus and bus tour?

Minibus Tour from 2,400 kr: Max 15 guests, much more personal experience, more flexible routing, hot meal included on unlimited chase. Your guide has time for every single guest. Best for those who want the most immersive experience.

Bus Tour from 1000kr: Max 52 guests, great value, same expert guides and same success rate. Best for budget-conscious travellers or those who enjoy a larger group atmosphere.

02How long do the tours last?

Tours runs for 5–9 hours. There is no fixed end time on unlimited and bus chase, we stay out as long as needed to find the lights. If the aurora appears at 2am on coast, we're still there. This unlimited approach is a key reason for our industry leading success rate.

03Where do we meet?

Your guide will meet you and greet you welcome at Scandic Ishavshotel in the city centre.

04What if I don't see the northern lights?

With a 98,1% success rate in solarmaximum this is rare, but nature can never be 100% guaranteed. We believe in total honesty - if conditions look very poor, we will tell you upfront and give you the option to reschedule before departure.

05Is it suitable for children or older guests?

Absolutely. Our small groups and warm minibus make it relaxed for both kids and grandparents. The late hours and cold mean the tour is best suited to ages 5 and up.

06What languages do you guide in?

English main language, but we also got spanish/portuguese guides. Marius also speaks alittle portuguese.

07Is food included?

On the VIP tour, yes — warm hotdogs by the bonfire, plus hot drinks and typical Norwegian snacks. Vegetarian and other dietary preferences are catered for if you let us know in advance. The short chase and Big Bus tours include hot drinks and snacks, but no meal.

08How many people are in the group?

We keep our minibus groups small — a maximum of 15 guests, so the experience feels personal and flexible. The Big Bus tour takes a larger group.

What to wear & bring

01What clothing do you provide?

We provide a full Arctic thermal suit (outer layer) for all guests on both minibus tours. This keeps you warm in temperatures down to –20°C. We do not provide boots or footwear — please bring your own warm, waterproof shoes or boots. Wool socks are strongly recommended.

02What should I wear underneath the thermal suit?

Layer up! We recommend: wool or thermal base layer (top and bottom), a mid-layer fleece or down jacket, and warm socks. The thermal suit goes over all of this. Even if it feels warm inside, temperatures at night and in open landscapes can drop significantly — it's always better to be too warm than too cold.

03Can I take photos of the northern lights?

Yes! Your guide takes free professional aurora photos that are sent to you the morning after via email or WeTransfer. We also bring tripods for guests who want to take their own shots. For smartphone users: use night mode, turn off the flash, and use the timer to avoid camera shake. Modern iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones produce excellent aurora shots.
